Cognition's Semantic Natural Language Processing (NLP)TM for the Legal industry enables law firms, litigation service bureaus, and all forms of eDiscovery and text processing technologies to derive greater meaning and value from the overwhelming amount of data generated through the e-discovery and forensics process. By using Cognition's Semantic NLP technology, the amount of data which requires human review is dramatically reduced, which, in turn, reduces the overall cost of the process. In addition, because of its ability to search on concepts, not just keywords, Cognition's Semantic NLP enables the user to possibly find additional "relevant" and "hot" content over that found by a human review process alone. Cognition interprets the meaning of words in the context of how they are used, thereby significantly increasing the precision of the discovery results. In addition, through the technology's understanding of synonymy and hyponymy (reasoning from general-to-specific), it is able to retrieve more relevant results, even when the exact words used in the discovery query are not contained in the retrievals. Cognition returns results which are more than just a pattern-match on the query words entered by the user -- Cognition returns results reflecting the desired contextual meaning of the words. This capability significantly increases the relevance and usefulness of the discovery results and enables lawyers to quickly hone in on the "smoking gun."
Cognition's Semantic NLP significantly reduces review time and cost by:
- Automatically analyzing case documents for unknown or special language
- Automatically culling the discovery documents using conceptual queries that segregate the documents into case-issue-oriented groups (i.e. "folders"), which are significantly richer in "hot" and "relevant" documents than the document base as a whole
- Delivering the culled documents for review by law firm attorneys much faster than a manual review process
- Giving lawyers the ability to update the culling queries on an ad hoc basis in response to newly found "hot" and "relevant" documents. This process creates even richer document groups ("folders").

The Cognition Semantic NLP Process for Legal

Cognition's Semantic technology is embedded as the conceptual search function within the Merrill-Lextranet™ document management system, and as an add-on feature within Lexis-Nexis Concordance™. In a study of an actual Merrill-Lextranet case involving approximately 10 million documents, the discovery document base was reduced (culled) by 54% of its original size, while retrieving all of the "hot" and "relevant" documents in the case by following the process outlined above (when compared with the manual review by attorneys of the entire document base). The diagram below illustrates the point "Irrelevant (Unrelated)" content is culled from the document set by Cognition's Semantic NLP filtering, thereby eliminating the need for human review.
